@jfobug tatting is NOT a dying art anymore. It is alive and well,,,growing by leaps and bounds! Yes do check out the internet. There are tons of free patterns, and instructions!

hey- do you have any thing you have made to show us? i'm very interested in learning tatting. but all i can find is 30 year old or so books.

@jfobug I made a snowflake in a large brass hoop from an old tatting pattern. Not many new tatting patterns are produce anymore because it is a dying art. So, START TATTING! A google search will provide gobs of links to sites dedicated to tatting, some even provide more modern patterns for free.

It is not knotting. Tatting is knotting. The stitch will loose at the end (unravel)or as soon you take it out from the ring. This is chain stitch from crocheting or on some knitting.

@condiNyc The end is secured. It won't unravel because if you continue tatting, you will continue in a circle with whatever pattern you have chosen to work with.

Love your sense of humor, curing those wary of any tediousness. Tatting is such fun, smooth, elegant, fast, and beautiful - whether sz 3 or sz 70! Of your 3 stitches made, stitch 1a (at 0:45) goes under the thread, while 2a and 3a go over the thread. Does that make a difference in your finished look? Thank you for teaching us by vid example.

@dhale3c Hummm, no they are all the same unless you are talking about the spot where I anchored the thread which is just a square knot. Other than that, they were all done the same. You may want to watch it again. :)
