  • vintagepa: I agree with you and kol hakovod.

I listen to his CDs - for me in particular 'Habet Mishomayim' and I'm continually amazed by what he has been able to achieve in the realm of music and classical chazzonus.

  • What makes you say that you do not 'particularly like him personally'? Have you ever met him? As far as I know, he is a complete mensch.

  • Please explain to me what - in your opinion, chazzonus is? Helfgot doesn't have to impress anybody. Whether you like it or not, Helfgot is certainly one of the finest chazzonim in the world today. Listen to his Habet Mishomoyim CD and Avos CD and then dare to post a real comment. These two CDs are nothing short of chazzonus brilliance. And in case you didn't know: Helfgot is born in Israel and has literally given concerts 'all over the world'.

  • Why all the animosity? Everyone is entitled to his opinion. Dare I give mine without being attacked? I have been to 2 Lincoln Center Helfgott concerts and loved every minute. The crowds were mesmerized by his powerful voice. Are there better chazzonim out there? Possibly, but to me, he is the most powerful. I prefer Benzion Miller, who I had the pleasure of davening with in Boro Park and on a Kosherica Cruise. His voice is powerful, sweet and inspirational and his diction perfect.

  • Yasher koach for an amazing selection. This is Helfgot in his prime, he takes nothing forgranted, his mouth is dome shaped at all times, his vowels are clean dark and his articulation is impecable. his c sharp inserted into the run of the mikolos maim is not the greatest. In this clip he expresses humility before the own who has granted him this gift, look at 8:23 into the clip his face is one of recognizing that he carries the responsiblity to inspire the people which he does. Bravo Helfgot!

  • Cantor Helfgot is amazing! It seems to me like he gets out of his comfort zone around C5, as you can hear at the end. But that doesn't mean he isn't a wonderful tenor still. Bravo!

  • GRATULESON !! MAZEL TOV !!!

  • very fine song full of heart

  • Sounds like the Blues, Jewish style

  • TripleLeo, just as with Yiddish as a spoken language, chazzanut (traditional cantorial singing in actual synagogue services) has, since the holocaust, been regarded as a dying art (It's well beyond beyond merely endangered.) but not yet completely extinct. Although still a joy to hear it in concert, how much greater when used to move communities to weeping anguished desire for repentance or ecstatic joy in divine service.

  • TripleLeo, In the days when all music was live, say 100 years ago in Europe, the synagogue services were often the only venue for poor Jews to hear quality music (and religious scruples might also oppose hearing music other than religious music) and so there actually were synagogues that sounded like this.

  • TripleLeo, these are Jewish prayers he's singing; standard synagogue texts expressing praise of God or yearning for closeness to God, etc., but he's singing these texts with music far more artistic, elaborately ornamented, and extended than one would find in just about any modern synagogue.

  • What a beautiful voice.Criticism is the domain of those who can't and wish they can. I am not of this gentleman's faith. I am a singer and I recognize this man's gift.

  • lol
