John Kennedy "Jack" Twyman
(born May 11, 1934 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a former professional basketball player. A 6' 6" forward guard from the University of Cincinnati, he spent eleven seasons (1955-1966) in the NBA as a member of the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals franchise (now the Sacramento Kings). Along with Wilt Chamberlain, Twyman became the first NBA player to average more than 30 points per game in a single season when he averaged 31.2 points per game during the 1959-60 season. He scored 15,840 points in his career, was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 1960 and 1962, and appeared in six NBA All-Star Games. Twyman was also known for his humanitarian efforts. He became the legal guardian of his teammate Maurice Stokes, who was paralyzed due to the aftereffects of a head injury suffered during the final game of the 1958 regular season, to help with medical finances. Twyman also organized the NBA's Maurice Stokes Memorial Basketball game, held at Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello, New York, to raise funds for needy former players from the game's early years - first to raise funds for Stokes' care and after his death, for other players. (The fundraising effort continues to this day, but the basketball game has been replaced by a pro-am golf event featuring NBA players.
Adolph "Dolph" Schayes
(known as Dolph Schayes) (born May 19, 1928 in New York, New York) is a retired American professional basketball player and coach in the NBA. He was a member of the 1955 NBA champion Syracuse Nationals and 12-time All-Star. Schayes played for the Nationals (and their reincarnation, the Philadelphia 76ers) from 1948 to 1964 in a Hall of Fame career. Schayes attended Creston Junior High School 79 and DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, New York, and played his college basketball at New York University 1944-48. Although tall for his era at 6'8", Schayes was especially known for his deadly, high-arcing, outside set-shot. Defenders who attempted to deny him the outside shot were confronted by his powerful drive to the basket. These two offensive weapons served him well, even as the NBA was transitioning into a league of jump-shooters. Early in Schayes' career, he broke his right arm and played almost an entire season in a cast. Oddly, this injury became a seminal point in Schayes' development: he learned to shoot with his off-hand, making him especially difficult to guard. He was one of the best — and the last — to use a two-handed set-shot with feet planted on the floor, before the game changed to one-handed jump shots.
Richard Vincent "Richie" Guerin
(born May 29, 1932, in The Bronx, New York City, New York) is a retired American professional basketball player and coach. The 6'4" (1.93 m) Guerin played with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) New York Knicks from 1956 to 1963 and was a player-coach of the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks franchise where he spent nine years. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1947 to 1954. While a reservist, Guerin attended Iona College from 1950 to 1954 where he scored 1,375 points in 67 games. After graduation, Guerin served on active duty at Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia for two years

  • Great players and a real life hero in Jack Twyman for how he cared for Maurice Stokes after his tragic injury...

  • what song is this?

  • Is Richie Guerin from France. His name looks like he does.

  • @DeepHauz

    Wait!

In the 50's, Teams FG% average was 37%! The NYK was the best (in that era) from the field with an average of 42.1% in 1959-1960!

In the 60's, Teams FG% average was 42%! The Miwaukee Bucks was the best (in that era) from the field with an average of 48.8% in 1969-1970!

Now, teams FG% average is almost 47%! The Phoenix Suns was the best (in that era) from the field with an average of 50.4% in 2008-2009!

Players had great shooting skills right now (sorry for my English bro)

  • I grew up in Cincinnati with JT as a friend of my dad's. When you're a little kid, he looked huge. I never knew he put up the kind of points I read about today. Today at age 55 and after 8 brain surgeries, I play b-ball dams near every day. I can almost dunk it!

  • These guys put up seriously great performances. I've got a spreadsheet that as unbiasedly as possible ranks players and while I still have guys to enter I've got it as Dolph Schayes being #34 all time, Tyman #41, Richie Guerin #33, and also of note Maurice Stokes (not featured) but at #11. Even back in the 50s some guys were ballers despite what most people want to think.

  • I remember Twyman as a great jump shooter and forward with the Cincinnati Royals, and he should never be forgotten for what he did for his friend Maurice Stokes. A very good man.

  • Some of the All-Time Greats of the Game!

  • back when you actually needed to have a jump shot to play ball.

  • omg jack twyman? twymans my surname i proper freaked out now i had a great great grandad called Jack ! :S
