I'm thinking about buying a set of rollers to train on for the winter. My friend Steve just bought rollers, so he invited me over to try them and I only fell off 3 or 4 times. It took a few minute to get used to it but once I felt comfortable I rode much better.
I had to make circles which is the way you should ride anyway to stay centered.
The rollers Steve bought were called Minoura ActionRoller Advance.

Thanks Steve for letting me try them out.

Thanks to GuruOfPiano for the awesome music.

ActionRoller Advance (Normal/Wide)
Almighty triple roller trainer
80mm diameter roller drum
It's the fact that the smaller diameter of roller drum, the greater the resistance.
Advance adopts 80mm diameter roller drum to get more natural resistance than Action Magroller's 105mm roller.
However, it's not so much different. We can say Action Magroller simulates flat road with tail wind, and Advance simulates head wind.
Another merit on smaller diameter
Another merit on smaller diameter roller is that the distance between bike and floor gets closer.
On rollers, the upper level of roller drum is the virtual floor level. Actual floor is located much lower. So you cannot reach the floor even if you extend your leg, and it's the reason why beginners feel "Rollers is dangerous".
Advance's smaller diameter roller makes the virtual floor level 25mm lower than Action Magroller, so it eliminates psychological apprehension.
Foldable frame
One of the purpose on developing Advance is providing enjoyable rollers at reasonable price.
For this reason, Advance adopts simpler fold-in-two frame besides Action Magroller adopts much more compact but more complicated fold-in-three frame.
The frame is constructed with light alloy material for being lightweight, easy to transport, and anti-rust against salty sweat.
Compatible with wide variety of wheel size
To enable to fit your own bike as perfectly as possible, the front roller is position adjustable in 5 points, and the rear roller is adjustable in 2 positions.
With this design, Advance is compatible with wide variety of wheel size; from 24"/650c to 27"/700c.
The exact compatible wheelbase size is from 950 to 1,090mm (+-10mm).

  • just a question....what advantage does the spandex bicycle shorts and tight clothing do inside where there is no wind...as opposed to regular shorts and a t shirt? because it just seems way too tight for comfort in the supposed area....

  • @scottspook Great question, the shorts have padding in them to make your long rides less painful on your butt and the Jersey is made to draw sweat away from the skin and evaporates on the outer layer. :)

  • relax your white knuckle grip of death and accelerate when the bike starts to get out of control. Worst things you can do is slow down and grab harder.

  • @jimsteele916 I'll try that next time I ride, thanks for the info :)

  • the kids are barricading themselves with the couch just in case the rollers lock up

  • @PHAEDRIDER That's funny :)

  • I'm sure you've mastered it by now, but I figured I'd comment to provide tips for first timers. I was just recently a first timer.

First, understand the the gyroscopic effect keeps you more stable the faster your wheels are going so, if possible, start with little resistance but a hard gear to increase stability.

Next, put one foot on the rail of the trainer, then pedal with one foot to get it up to speed, then go.

and Lastly, Look Forward! it's much easier than looking straight down.

  • i checked out the chinese cycling team on rollers....crazy fast legs.. I recommend previewing the vid sry no link

  • @KBDProductionsTV ok, that makes sense, I much prefer mountain bikes, and lower speeds but I bet your cardio is superb! nice work

  • @GanzLONDON Rollers are a little noisy, but much more fun to train on.
