This washer has been in my family since 1984, and has a ton of hours on it. Lately the washers been kinda noisy, and my mother was thinking of updating it with a newer one. Before she spent her hard earned money i checked the belts just to make sure they were alright. I was thinking of checking the belts for a long time, but kept putting it off. Turns out the agitator belt was super shot! Watch!

  • Take that sucker apart and replace those old worn parts with new ones and clean up that rust and repaint her!, she will last another 20 yr's!

  • AND be sure you get the new belts from an appliance parts store and not from a hardware or auto parts place. Although the appear similar, the Maytag V-belts are made with a slightly different angle. Regular V-belts will give you problems, especially during the spin cycle.

  • I bet many newer washers dont even last 10 years. wish i had an oldie.

  • My mom and dad had a Direct Drive Kenmore washer that they bought in 1987, it lasted until 2007. Dont tell me that the driect drive set up isnt as realiable as belt drive. Just dont freeking overload the machine and you will never have to touch the coupler.

  • someone has to get off their ass and wipe the crap off the washer so the crap dont get on the clothes as their being taken out.

  • I have a 1984 model just like this one. I recently had the belts replaced by maytag and they said keep this old one going as long as you can. Said the new ones arn't nothing like the old maytags!
