Menus are on the right because they should never be on the top or bottom simply because with the aspect ratio of a screen being the opposite of a sheet of paper, up:down real estate of a computer monitor (HD, for example) is precious. There is plenty of space to the sides - so that's where all menus should go (it's too logical for some people though).
However - the problem is that any size less than about 75 pixels causes "dancing icons" which makes side menus (i.e., vertical menus) practically useless. Sigh.
