Actually:

Yuki (雪) = 雪(snow) = Snow;

Yuki (有希) = 有(being,have,happen) + 希(uncommon, rare, hope, wish) = "having hope"?

Japanese language have many homophones, so the spelling is as important as the pronunciation. Its common to use this to make puns.

So, Yuki's name DOES NOT means snow, but is an pun to describe her "melting snow"

character.

Erm, actually, Nagato Yuki is written as "長門有希", while the kanji for snow is "雪"
