Mayhem: Lynching Riot Cops in Kinshasa, DR Congo

On July 27, 2007, as Jean-Pierre Bemba, one of the 4 Vice Presidents in the transitional government and one of the 33 presidential contenders, is speaking at a rally at a nearby soccer stadium, his supporters are wreaking havoc on Oshwe Street and other locations in Kinshasa. They lynched cops, "necklacing" them (not captured on video) and raped women. (Languages spoken by the crowd are Lingala, Swahili, and some French.)

I lived in Kinshasa from 78 to 82. Mobutu may have been robbing the country blind but there was order. The stores were full of goods and the streets were safe (during the day).

Mr. Bemba has now been arrested in Belgium by Belgian authorities on the account of a warrant issued by the International Criminal for rape; torture; outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment; and pillaging a town or place in connection with attrocities commited in the Central African Republic. His transferred to Court in The Hague is now expected to take place soon.
