http://www.premierguitar.com PG columnist Juan Alderete (The Mars Volta, Racer-X, Big Sir) talks about the basics and philosophy of approaching the fretless bass in his December 2011 print magazine column, which can be read in its entirety online and for free -- http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2011/Dec/The_Rumble_Seat_A_Fretle....

  • correct me if i'm wrong, but that's not a fretless bass!?!

  • @ArseLoad0fMetal666 It actually is a fretless bass. What appears to be frets on Mr. Alderete's bass are just markings so he can quickly reference his fretboard position since he uses fretted basses quite a bit, too. He talks more about the rhyme and reason and where he actually gets this done at in the Rig Rundown we did with him earlier this year. Check that out for more info on the not-so-fretless bass.

    Thanks for watching,

  • I would Just put the P BASS tone off, fretless cannot be appreciated with wide open pickups

  • Great video fuck the hater talkin shit.

  • 6:27 Holy. Shit.

  • @coreymineard I cares

  • @TheMemoryjo holy shit, just shut up. Nobody cares.

  • @coreymineard at 4:10 hes clearly just making random noises and if you don't already know the intervals of a major scale than you're probably too stupid to even hold a bass guitar.

  • could watch him do this for hours.

  • As he's only sliding a semi-tone/tone for most of those riffs wouldn't a string bend work as well for keeping those overtones?

  • @TheMemoryjo he is walking through intervals of the major scale to show harmony and intonation.

    Pick up a book, kid.
