I love this man! Met him when I was about 16 or so and he bought me a beer and gave me a fag... that was during the interval. This was quite a few years ago when he was with the Ian Campbell Folk Group. He told me that the more beer he drank, the better he played. Unfortunately I had to leave soon after to catch the last bus home. Don't know whether he fancied me or not, but I certainly fancied him! So glad to know he's still going strong as I also heard the reports he was not well.

Go watch the fairports at maidstone 1970 on youtube, this is how the guys was then and the talent just oozed out of him like sweat on a hot day on the rest of us.

@Films2006 I also met dave with Ian Campbell around 1970 in a pub in B'ham. I was trying to impress my girlfriend singing PLease Release me with a free N'Easy trio. After he said "was that you singing?" expecting a pint I said "yes" Says he "you were f*****G crap!" but he told me to try folk music, 40 rs later I run my own folk club and never looked back

Why sit? Tis a miracle he's still alive. Surely the greatest fiddler ever
-
And this only goes to show:
Practice makes perfect in the best possible way.
He was an energetic demon fiddler as a young man. He turned into an inspired accompagnateur in his middle years. Now? Sheer bloody magic ....
-
surely this proves he's the most talented, original musician the west has ever heard ?
a true genius - long may he live !!
-
long live Dave
-
Or he could be the product of working damn hard on an incredible natural talent, he has perfected his craft through evolution of some 40 odd years. And saying he's born different just lowers the skill he has worked hard to perfect.
-
Dave just has to be the produt of intelligent design. He could not have evolved like the rest of us.

Brilliant! It nearly makes me forget what a great singer he could be.
My violin mentor, only one question why does he only sit and play?, when I saw him with Fairport Convention in Philadelphia he was all over the stage, never stood still for a minute, he was the energy of the band

I guess it's the mix of his ill health of recent years (emphysema, double lung transplant - from which he's recovering very nicely), and just getting older like the rest of us!
