Beautiful warm waters of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.
Out to the edge of the outer reef the water drops from 30m to 400m almost vertically.

  • Probably.

It's a memory that stuck with me because of the sense of vulnerability and almost fear from drifting over such a void, so I have little doubt that my mind's eye has made it more foreboding than it really was.

I went looking for a video that showed what I remembered, and settled on this one. I think we probably drifted further away from the wall where the water gets darker because there isn't as much particles/sand/whatever from the bottom.

  • you mean "empty blueness"?

  • I went snorkeling in Cozumel once, and we went over something like this.

It was really strange to go from seeing all of the reef life at the bottom to just empty blackness.
