UCF junior point guard A.J. Rompza hit a 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds remaining, helping the Knights claim their second consecutive upset of the first-place team in the Conference USA standings.

Rompza's 3-pointer from about 24 feet helped the Knights (18-9 overall, 5-9 in Conference USA) collect a 65-64 win over Southern Miss (21-7 overall, 10-4 in C-USA) Saturday night before an announced crowd of 7,402. UCF-Southern Miss photos

The Knights have won four of the past five games.

"I kept telling myself, `If I get the ball, I'm going to knock down the shot,'" Rompza said.

UCF trailed Southern Miss 63-60 with 1:05 remaining and had to burn three quick fouls to get into the bonus.

Senior forward A.J. Tyler fouled Southern Miss senior forward Gary Flowers and he missed the front end of the one-and-one opportunity. Sophomore guard Marcus Jordan grabbed the rebound and UCF called timeout.

Jordan was fouled and hit two freethrows to cut Southern Miss' lead to 63-62 with 11 seconds remaining.

Rompza fouled Southern Miss junior guard Angelo Johnson before any time ran off the clock. Johnson hit one of two freethrows. Jordan got the rebound and drove the ball up the floor.

Jordan was covered by three Golden Eagles and passed to Rompza, who knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer.

The Knights hoisted Rompza in the air at halfcourt, then the team celebrated with a victory lap around UCF Arena.

Jordan led the Knights with 20 points, while Tyler added 14 and Rompza finished with four.

Senior guard R.L. Horton led the Golden Eagles with 20 points. Flowers entered the game ranked second in Conference USA with 19.8 points per game, but UCF limited him to six points.
