In 1964, a Boeing B-52 bomber on loan from the Air Force back to Boeing for flight test encountered heavy sheer turburlance which broke the entire verticle assembly off of the aircraft in flight. This is the official US Air Force documentry film regarding the event.

WOW! Looks like they had it all the way. They didn't even release the bloodhound.

Then they decided to shorten the height of the stabilizer tip for the rest of the B-52 lineup.

@otochari In 1968 six F-111s were sent to Indochina for operational testing. After five weeks three of them had crashed due to mechanical failure and the survivors were withdrawn. They returned in 1972 and performed much better. They did not require tankers or ECM support, and could operate in weather that grounded most other aircraft. One F-111 could carry the bomb load of four Phantoms.

@Ironwench68 since the B-52D the planes where flying with external tanks, that's what you're seeing in this video. The AGM would be mounted between the fuselage and the first engine pair.

read the book Going Downtown by Jack Broughton (Col. USAF rtd)
page 180 gives the whole sad story about the F111 in Vietnam.

the P39 was loved by Chuck Yeager and he never thought it was a lemon, the Russians did great work with it. But politicians always want a plane to do many roles/tasks.
McNamara called it commonality and it costed the US billions and many pilots, for instance he ordered the F111 to Vietnam , the result was horrible, also the 104 was sent to Vietnam to strafe palmtrees and hooches, result ? you guessed it..
The politicians will never learn.......
