I know of at least one muslim thinker who disagrees that there are scientific facts in the Qur'an: Nidhal Guessoum (he is a physicist). He argues that later scientific discoveries have been read back into the Qur'anic text and that this is possible because the Arabic of the Qur'an is generally quite complex- occasionally even obscure.

I have met a few well educated muslims and yet the majority of them seem to reject macro evolution based on a few verses of the Qur'an. Obviously problematic.

According to the Qur'an the mountains were put on Earth to stop it shaking (and us with it).

According to Muhammad the cause of the shaking is a giant fish.

The Earth is on the back of the giant fish, which is in a pond, which is on a rock, which is on an angel's back, who is on a bigger rock, which is in the air.

When the fish gets aggitated it moves too much and causes the Earth to shake, and that is why Allah made mountains.

Personally, I'd have shot the fish.

Another possible reason could be as described in the book 'Brain Sex' by Anne Moir and David Jessel, where they relate how differently men and women recall information at a car crash scene. Women tended to note 'surroundings' information, such as sky colour, warm day etc, whereas men tended to note car speed and more finer details. A woman may require support from another woman, in particular for reporting distressing issues (such as rape)

In Islam, both genders are equal but different in nature. Islam seeks to nurture that. Regarding the witness issue, this is because women were not expected to be the sole providers for the family and hence not involved as much with the economic side of life.

Whoever claimed that the Earth is flat needs to go read the scriptures again. It may be that the 'Islam leader' was referring to the day of judgement.  The Qur'an is clear when it describes the Earth (surah 79, verse 30) as 'egg-shaped', which we now know from satellite pictures as geo-spherical. Science and Islam have a beautiful history together (just see Islam-Spain era, Andulusia).
