The sexual tension is just candy for the gay community. The thing that survivors of will and integrity have is the ability to sublimate impulse and desire, arguably the whole point of the movie, something that makes lesser people envy and despise them more. The sexuality argument is largely a manifestation of the same desire for explicit emotion that makes slash fiction so very tawdry, weak, and shallow.
Accomplishment trumps conquest and desire is dull in execution.
Hilarious but you left out one reason why Captain Renault may have put Rick in danger- He is not in love with Rick. But who knows. Rains was a great actor and you showed how he created a multifaceted character. One of those facets could have been bisexuality. It's plausible.
I think your intelligence is misapplied here. Roger Ebert is a bonehead who suggests Captain Renault is gay... even though the overt signs are that Renault is obsessed with women... perhaps you are projecting interpretations from our currently Gayed-Up Culture back into a time when Renault's actions would not have been interpreted in this way. Do you suppose the script writers or the director told Raines "Play this guy as Gay"...Did Raines write in his memoires: Mais Oui, Renault is Gay !
That's funny, but I would have thought that aspecat of Renault was made reasonably obvious in the film. Rain's body language is frequently suggestive of it. There's even Rick's comment about Renault being 'broad-minded', implying a threesome with the young woman and her finance, which I always took as a deliberate comment on Renault's sexuality.
They both went off to fuck

Why is it that gay men fawn over men they can't have.

I like the narrative, I never thought of that before.

Jeff, your narrative is very interesting. I would like to see more of what you have to see about this great actor in his other roles.

I wonder what Alvy Singer would say about this video if he heard the content being verbalized behind him in a line at the movies!!!
