Native Son from POETRY: a hip hop album by Christopher K.P. Brown

Lyrics:

This is the narrative of a native son
taken from your bosom when you were still young
living upon unfamiliar land
shined upon by a familiar sun
a familiar voice spoken in unfamiliar tongue
this is the narrative of a native son
uncertain of my destination
uncertain of where i'm from

and some say West Africa, yoruba tribe
but those are details of which i'm denied
and the only thing that connects me to africa is
blood, family, culture, heritage
tradition, struggle, independence,triumph
Nkrumah, Accra, Soweto, Mandela
Apartheid, AIDS, famine, food
ivory, oil, Mali, gold, kings, queens
peasants, trade, agriculture
knowledge, spirit, Selassie, Lumumba,
Lagos, Nairobi, Invisible Children,
music, art, poetry, dance
slavery, bondage, Equiano,
the middle passage

This is the narrative of a native son
taken from your bosom when you were still young
living upon unfamiliar land
shined upon by a familiar sun
a familiar voice spoken in unfamiliar tongue
this is the narrative of a native son
uncertain of my destination
uncertain of where i'm from

and some say north america
but this land never accepted me
it just neglected my history
told lies instead of truths
planted black seeds in bloody soil
lynched my roots
told me that africa was a land full of heathens
had me believing the negative images when I was still teethin
but I found pride behind the lies
so now I put rhyme with reason
to tell the story of a land so glorious
we have to recognize the richness of her past
and the beauty of her present
mother africa
this is the narrative of one of your native sons
I was taken from your bosom when you were still young
i'm living upon unfamiliar land
i'm shined upon by a familiar sun
a familiar voice spoken in unfamiliar toungue
this is the narrative of a native son
uncertain of my destination
uncertain of where i'm from
uncertain of my destination
uncertain of where i'm from
this is the narrative of a native son.
