On January 3rd Nancy P. drove me from Northampton to Kripalu Center in Lenox/Stockbridge, MA where we met Terry R. who I had met for the first time at Kripalu in the winter of 1986, I believe. 19 years ago. Terry later became my neighbor on Washington St. in Hoboken, NJ. I spent time at Kripalu countless times, during its days as an ashram where Amrit Desai reigned supreme, believed by many to be an enlighted master.
I had last visited Kripalu in 1999 and it was strange to see how it had changed even though I did recognize a few faces.
It now has a much more wordly vibe, people with laptops and cell phones everywhere drinking coffee in the downstairs cafe across from the much expanded shop, reflecting the total commercial transformation it has undergone during the last ten years. A young man in the store told me it now is classified as an educational institution, and that is what it is, not an ashram but a conference center. A conference center with a million dollar view, the one thing that did not change.
I first visited Kripalu in January of 1985, when I was still working at the Associated Press. This all seems so long ago. I wonder how the original residents feel about this transformation?

  • i finally went there! I'm not too into yoga, but i think it's cool. A friend suggested I try it. It feels like a holy place. I liked the moderate yoga. One guy had a such a calm voice, during yoga. It made me feel so relaxed. I got sick on my visit there, and had to leave early, but I will go back again, soon!

  • I am hoping to be able to volunteer there very soon....if they accept. Both my experiences there were amazing. Kripalu is my sangha.

  • Kripalu changed my life and it was through the grace of amrit desai that my heart was opened

  • As long as we look for perfection and happiness outside of ourselves we shall meet with frustration and an endless round of excuses.

Not that your doing that, I felt for you. Just I hope you have forgiven your previous Guru and found the Reality in your own heart.

    Guru OM

  • I went to Kripalu! It was an amazing experience. I miss it now alot
