I didn't know at first, since every other time I'd played that battle, I was able to walk up to her and kill her without hitting it.

and i have another question, when i defeated the 3rd (The witch) i found a japanese katana sword, what do i do with it??

Take the katana to what's-her-face, the lady that sells beam swords. Eventually, she'll craft the green sword out of it, though I can't remember how long it takes.
