Review #39: Nightmare Detective
Director: Shinya Tsukamoto (iron man, vital)
Stars: Ryuhei Matsuda (rampo noir), Hitomi (j-pop idol)
Year: 2006

After nearly half a year the Japanese horror reviews are back. Im trying to bring these back better than ever, so now the entire review is composed of clips of the film, so you can get more of a feel for what the movies are like. Thanks for your support and patience with these videos, the next one will be Norikos Dinner Table, the sequel to Suicide Club. That will be later in October. Any comments or feedback is always appreciated, and I hope you enjoy this new phase of reviews.

UPDATE: let me know what you guys think of the new review. I personally think this is the best format to go, cuts out the fluff from older reviews and gets straight down to what's important: the film. Glad to see the initial response is positive though!

  • Iron Man as in Tetsuo The Iron Man?

  • bingo.

  • I've been trying to watch this one online for a long time, but the quality always sucks. I am more interested in seeing it now though. Hey, what's everyones favourite Tsukamoto film? I have no idea what of his work is popular. I personally like A Snake of June best.

  • vital is my favorite, but I haven't bought a snake of june yet and that one looks very good...

  • look up Kwaidan.

classic stuff + "Zoo" .. think it's a collection of little movies, I was very very surprised when I decided to pick that one up.

  • both good dvds yeah. yeah, zoo turned out to have some good stuff on there.

  • One thing about this format is that the clips kind of distract from the voiceover...it's a bit difficult to focus on ywhat you're saying, especially with the audio of the clips drowning you out at times.

Also, the fluff from the old reviews was fun, no? At least, I enjoyed it.

  • the death while the victims are sleeping reminds me of nightmare on elm street!

  • So you liked Horror movies?

They really do send my mind to a colorful state. Funny. With the gore that may come with it. It's mostly "black".

  • Japans response to "A nightmare on elm st."

  • I've seen Matsuda before somewhere :/ Can't figure out where though =_=;

  • his intestines fell out

    havent seen that in awhile

do they even do thta alot in japan

  • Yep pretty awesome film

  • This reminds me exactly of the Nightmare Inspector manga! The plot is almost the same (in the manga the main character was a "Baku" {dream eater} who got rid of peoples reoccuring nightmares) except this is set current era. I haven't seen this movie yet but I'd highly suggest the manga to anyone interested in this plot (and it has great artwork and a really interesting story).

  • Tetsuo: The Iron Man

  • Thx dude. Great series;)
