Cessna 172 flaps failed to extend landing at Langley, BC, Canada. Runway length is 2100ft and almost went of the end! Sadly the pilot died recently in an accident whilst demonstrating a spin recovery.

  • looks like he had the makings of an airline pilot.

  • Yeah he got over 90% for both the written and flight tests.

  • wow you got to the end fast!!!!! good thing you made it!

  • Yah there is grass at the end in case you go too far.

  • Situation was not dangerous, but the landing was unsafe: Floated eternally, bounced, and made a bad decision not to go around on this short runway...

  • No flaps in a Cessna....come on...it's not that dangerous..Seriously, you start your flare over the grass/overrun...not hard. You could fly a slower approach speed...that's why you practice slow flight with flaps up.

  • If you had a short runway and no flaps why didn't you try to land on the numbers instead of 1000' + down the runway

  • i see you landed safely without having your flaps down.... what's the risk anyway?

  • flaps arent needed in a 172......just a dumb video......pilot didnt know what he was doing was all.

  • "Sadly the pilot died recently in an accident whilst demonstrating a spin recovery."... And all you do is Criticize??? Damn...

Sure, Landing with no flaps is not THAT dangerous, i do it all the time on a 800 Mts Runway, perhaps i shouldn't but please...

R.I.P Comrade, and my condolences to his family and friends... It always makes me sad when a pilot dies doing What he Loves.

  • HAHAHAHA, Pre-flight fail!!!!

  • @dingoklectos if he bounced a couple of times, he waited too long for the go-around, which leads to low airspeed

  • Flaplesslandings are very normal procedure for most light training aircraft. Not trying to be a prick but that is a pretty good effort using up 2100ft in a cessna

  • They started me out with no flap landings to cut down on complexity. You just carry a little more speed on final. No big deal, certainly NOT life-threatening.

  • @dingoklectos a go around is only as dangerous as the pilot makes it. He may have decided to execute it late, he may have not kept the nose down when he applied power, and if he spun I suspect that he forgot what his right foot was supposed to be doing. A go around is statistically safer than trying to save a landing like that.

  • @DirectTech

Going around is not always safe. In Santa Monica airport, a commercial pilot flared his cessna 152 a bit too high, so it hit hard and he bounced a couple of times, he tried to make a go around, crashed and got killed.

Ofcourse, he had flaps extended to the right degree, but didn't have enough airspeed, leading to a stall, then an unrecoverable, erect spin close to the ground.
