1941年12月8日、日本軍がハワイの真珠湾を攻撃し、太平洋戦争勃発。アメリカ国内では戦意が高揚し、3人の若者レッキ－、バジロン、スレッジそれぞれが、祖国のため­に戦おうと決心する。レッキ－は新兵として、バジロンは軍曹として戦地に向かうが、心臓を患うスレッジは医師である父から入隊を許されない。海兵隊第1師団第一連隊に配属­されたレッキ－は戦友たちと共に太平洋ソロモン諸島のガタルカナル島へ向かう。
