Singer : Abbey Lincoln
Album : That's Him! (1957)
Song : Don't Explain
Authors : Billie Holiday / Arthur Herzog Jr
Hush now, don't explain
Just say you'll remain
I'm glad you're back
Don't explain
Hush now, don't explain
You're my joy and pain
Skip that lipstick
Don't explain
You know that I love you
And what love endures
All my thoughts are of you
For I'm so completely yours
Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
Right or wrong, don't matter
When you're with me, sweet
Hush now, don't explain
Just say you'll remain
I'm glad you're back
Don't explain...

a treasure as an early testimony of a seminal voice, Billy's version wins out, but this is appreciated as proud evolution of Abbey...

Realy hard listening to this after years of Holiday's rendition... I prefer the older Lincoln to the young one. With time, she got strenght, expression and meaning. That I can't find in here. Well, Holiday wrote herself the tune for herself. But that's not the reasons for she is unsuperable. I discovered Lincoln's greatness in a TEN CENTS A DANCE, found in a compilation called "Rodger's and Hart's songbook". I really could get along without this rendition of Don't Explain very well, Wimpy. Bye.
