Before she was Patti Smith the punk priestess, before she was Patti Smith the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer, before she was the subject of biographies and films, she was Patti Smith the poetess, giving readings in downtown New York at places like the Poetry Project, or wherever downtown poets read. Here she is almost as before. 2010 finds her still Patti the poetess, enchanting us with her surrealist verse, this one to a Russian filmmaker I never heard of but maybe you did. St. Marks Church annual Poetry Project Marathon. Lower East Side New York City January 1, 2010

  • Patti Smith's great poem for the Russian director of Solaris (Солярис), Andrei Rublev (Андрей Рублёв), Stalker (Сталкер) and Mirror (Зеркало).

THE BOY, THE BEAST AND THE BUTTERFLY

    (For Andrei Tarkovsky)

the eternal sun runs to the mother

she smoothes his brow and bids him drink

from her well of hammered mist

    come along sweet lad

    fog rises from the ground

the falling soot is just the dust of a simmering gem

  • thanks for posting it!

  • So beautiful, so very, very beautiful.

  • I love this woman!!

  • Thanjs, go ahaed for the end.

I will just add that Solaris is a SF novel by Stanilas Lem, polish writter. A remake of the Tarkosky movie that have been made some years ago by hollywood - not bad at all but may be just a bit too coloured :)
