Sophie's POV.


A little bit after Nick and Jamie walked out, I instructed the eldest girl in the room, Jennifer, to be in charge. Then I an out of the school house. They were stopped a little ways away from the bank. I picked up my skirt as much as I could without showing too much leg. I quickly walked toward the bank. On the way, I heard three gun shots. This caused me to run. I ran past Jamie and Nick on the horse, and over to where two men laid dead. I covered my mouth in horror.

"Ma'am... I-"

"What happened?" I looked up. I recognized his face, but couldn't recall his name.

"They tried to rob the bank, ma'am, but the sheriff took care of it. I figure it woul-"

"Where's the sheriff?" I interrupted the man a second time.

"Over at Doc's."
"Oh, my goodness." I muttered.

"Why don't you go over there, ma'am." He suggested.

I nodded. "Of course. Thank you." I turned away from scene and headed over to the doctor's office. When I reached it, I opened the door and stepped in slowly. Bethany was crying and Kevin had his arm around her shoulders. It looked like he had shed a few tears, also.

"What happened," I said quietly. Bethany continued to cry into the hanker chief and paid me no mind. I looked over at Kevin. He looked at me sadly. He let go of my sister and walked over to me. He took my elbow and led me over to a corner.

"My brother... he..um... h-"




Bethany's POV.

I kept hearing the doctor's words in my head.

"Well, I'm not really sure. We've got the bullet out, which is good. He's running a high fever, which is very bad. And he's unconscious. It's a 50 to 50 chance. If he gets over the fever, then he should get better quickly. He lost a lot of blood, though, so there isn't much of a chance that he WILL get over the fever. I'm sorry Kevin. There isn't any more we can do."

I hadn't been able to hold my tears back any longer after that. It sort of got hard to breathe. I don't even know why I was crying so much. He was shot before my eyes while saving me. I owed him my life. Kevin had put his arm around my shoulders and helped me to calm down. I was still crying when my sister walked in. Kevin took her over to the corner, where he told her quietly what happened. Nobody was paying attention to me. I was actually thankful for that. I slowly walked into the room where they put Joe. His skin was a pale yellow color and covered in sweat. He looked exhausted. His shirt was off, so I could clearly see the large white bandage over his chest. I walked over and sat in the chair that was next to the small bed. I took his hand in mine and rubbed his palm with my thumb. As I reached over to move some of his hair out of his face, one of my teardrops fell onto his forehead. Joe didn't even make any acknowledgement that I was there, touching him or anything. He seemed almost lifeless. I swallowed the lump in my throat and stood up. I rushed out of the room. I was determined. Joseph WAS going to get well again.

"Doctor!!"
