Awash in oil, yet its people, for the most part, are destitute. Nigeria discovered "liquid gold" half a century ago and today is the world's eighth largest oil exporter. But the country is plagued by corruption, inefficiency, underdevelopment and an uprising in its Niger Delta -- the area where most of its oil reserves are located. So why, some 600 billion dollars later, are Nigeria's people still among the poorest in the world? Is it the 'resource curse' or something more?

  • My people oil is bigger than one country government. The multi-national companies like SHELL OIL need to end and a company they are using blood money to fund western countries. The blood money profit they make in billions or pounds, euros, and dollas stay in the western world. WE hate Shell as a company, shell is own by the European governments. Human right, land mass dead.

  • roflmao i'm sorry but the yoruba accent kills me -_-

  • "People know that Nigeria does not exist as a true nation. But our leaders are fraudulently holding up to the country because of the oil in Itsekiri land, in Ogoni land, in Ilaje, Ijawland and Urhobo land and some parts of Iboland. There was a civil war in this country and the fight was mainly to hold on to the oil. What is holding this contraption called Nigeria together is the oil.." --- Asari Dokubo. Nigerian Tribune Newspapers. Sunday August 17, 2008.

  • Buzzmasterflash ah

i think you should stop calling your self nigerian because anybody who advocates the splitting of Nigeria should die

  • Your right...DuckingNDiving. but the truth is that Nigerians want to go to heaven but they don´t want to die.....Nigeria will never no peace, untill there is equal right and also justice....what a pitty for everyday people that is suffering the whole pain.

  • Nigerians are just crying to go to heaven..but don´t want to die..These heartless, selfish, and greedy leaders are blocking the doors of ur heaven but none want to die.they will donate to build all this fake churches and mosque so through there they can brain watch its followers with emotional sentments of going to paradise and heaven to mind control and calm ur actions against there evil leadership...wake up and stand for ur natural right folks.untill that day no peace for everyday ppl.

  • yes how do you think europe became free and democratic?in ireland we had to fight against the whole of the british empire to get our freedom in 1921,africans do fight, but they replace corrupt governments with other corrupt governments, when you impose a democracy,it is the people that have to make sure it works,if the people don't care then you will always have this problem. You do need to protest even if there is bloodshed,it won't change otherwise.

  • DuckingNDiving...We cannot protest in a country where human rights is not respected by the powers that be?how can one protest in a country where the leaders are brutal.come to think of it!this leaders we r talking about are listening and reading all the international and local comments and.. news.but no atom of change from them..believe me violence, war and disintigration will solve this problem.why should the poor ppl always be in the resiveing end?Only time will solve this mess...

  • That will only happen when the government leaders actually put the people's interest first before their own pockets. These corrupt leaders almost make imperialism look good because at least then the native people had an excuse. It's been how many years since the liberation of the nation and it still lives in poverty, yet its a richly blessed country and other nations kill to have such resources. Its shame
