Too Goode to be true

I hope Virgil Goode will run for office again. He is a fine Virginian and one of the few speakers of the truth that we have had in Congress in recent years.

At the time, Republicans were social liberals and Democrats were social conservatives. In a way, it would not be wholly inaccurate to say that yesterday's Democrat's are today's Republicans. As far as his actual involvement with the KKK, he stopped all activities with the KKK roughly a year after becoming a member, aside from written letters containing content related to his racist point of view. His racism-though horrid-was not an uncommon thing, particularly among males his age at the time.

Actually, Byrd was a member of the KKK for a very short period of time. After his short membership with the KKK came to an end, he quickly (and very efficiently) began an attempt to mend his relationship with black West Virginians. He is responsible for many, many programs that have helped minorities in WV. You seem amused that he was a Democrat at the time, but remember that Republicans and Democrats have traded positions on social matters since then.
