Born in Memphis, in a poor family, Johnny Burnette first started a boxing career, with his brother Dorsey. Then with a third boxer, Paul Burlison, they formed the band which would later become the Johnny Burnette trio. They recorded they first single in 1954, but never met a huge success. They were hired as electricians by the company that employed Elvis Presley as a truck driver. They were joined by a drummer, Tony Austin. In 1955, Dorsey Burnette left the band and was replaced by a guy named Black on the bass (this guy was the brother of Bill Black, Elvis' bassist). In 1960, the trio disbanded, and the Burnette brothers wrote a few songs for Ricky Nelson. Johnny had two hits in 1960, with Dreamin' and You're Sixteen, before his death in 1964 in a boating accident.

  • @johnnyweep59 - well there ya go! He did use a Gretsch on some 50s stuff according to a couple of old timers. I also have seen pictures of him with an Epiphone semi-hollow in the 60s. But yes. This has to be that wonderful "two headed guitar" - I've held the original single cutaway in my hands once. So light! Now I know what it sounds like through a standell. Thanks!

  • @jensenbellYour spot on it wasnt a telecaster.. Grady used a custom made Bigsby double neck with 3+1 pick-ups and a bigsby vibrato tailpiece.what a sound Grady made!
