This scene is a testament to the power of movies. Matt and Thandie were amazing. Dillon's reassuring strength and calm was pitch perfect. His character's conflict was palpable and when he brushed that conflict aside and did the right and descent thing, you could feel the change in him. That is solid acting. And the music just sent the whole thing over the top.

One of the most powerful scenes of any movie I've ever seen.

Not to invite hate here, but I'd often wondered what impact this movie would have had if the director let her burn. To me the most powerful part was, after he gained her trust again and said 'we're going to get you out' and then the fire started. To me that was where the understanding and redemption happened.
In the end, by fate or chance it could have gone the other way. They pulled him out and her panic and terror at 4:29 could have been the last he saw of this woman.

I think her head shake is almost denial. It's too complicated for her to accept a bad man can be good at the same time. My father was almost identical to this man. He could only help the helpless. He only understood protecting victims, but his assumption was that otherwise if you weren't victimized, you were probably already guilty of something and collecting your karma. I totally understand this kind of duality.

Funny how everyone is praising Matt for this scene. Yes he was good, but Thandie Newton made this a standout scene. She won the British equivalent of the Oscar for her role. I remember Entertainment Weekly magazine listing the Academy's refusal to recognize her acting as one of the 10 biggest entertainment disappointments of the year. I agreed.

@Leksakshund I agree with you. Matts character did the ultimate thing - risked his own life to save another's. There's a saying "save just one life, save humanity".
Beautiful. Every time I see this I get emotional. I've said things in the past to people who look different to me that I'm not proud of. I wish I hadn't, but I did. But I'm human and I care. This scene makes me fell human. Yes I'm flawed and stupid but I have the capacity to change.
