An English version of the children's song by Johannes Brahms, sung a cappella by sisters Cara Marais (left), Christy-Lyn Marais (middle) and Megan Marais (right). Lyrics below.

INFORMATION:
"The Little Sandman" is No.4 from Brahms'Volks-Kinderlieder, WoO 31 (Folksongs for Children),and was dedicated to the children of Robert and Clara Schumann. It was written in German, named "Sandmannchen", but was set to English words by W.G.Rothery. There is a well-known arrangement by John E. West for SSA choir, with piano accompaniment. This song is currently part of the 2001-2012 Grade 2 piano ABRSM curriculum, appearing as "The Sandman", with the English translation of the first stanza quoted as: ""The flow'rs have long been sleeping beneath the pale moonshine. Their tiny heads are nodding upon their stalks so fine. They rosetree bends her dreaming head, and shakes her petals red. Slumber, slumber, my own sweet baby dear!"

LYRICS:
Beneath the silv'ry moonlight like tiny sparkling gems
The flowrets all are sleeping upon their slender stems.
The trees wave gently to and fro and whisper soft and low:
"Slumber, slumber, my darling baby dear".

The birds you heard this morning have long since gone to rest
And now are close together against their mother's breast.
And there they lie so still and warm, secure from every harm.
Slumber, slumber my darling baby dear.

Now comes the little sandman, in every house he'll peep.
To find the naughty children who will not go to sleep.
And then a little sand he tries to sprinkle in their eyes.
Slumber, slumber my darling baby dear.

Sheet music: (Solo version with piano accompaniment)

  • Wow was that beautiful! I'd love to hear more, but I know good things take time. A world to save, eh?

Being siblings is the perfect middle-ground between self-harmonizing and singing with different (unrelated) people: you have a similar sound, but slightly different voices, so the blend is great without that annoying echo of self-harmonization.

    Thanks for sharing!
