[About Aurora 9x18]
Using 162 LEDs, Aurora 9x18 creates beautiful waves of colors. The heart of the unit is PIC24F08KA101 micro-controller. Using a proprietary technique, this controller controls 9 x 3 (RGB) independent channels of PWM signals. The result is just beautiful.
The unit is a little over 4 inches in diameter. Fitting all of the components in this small unit was no simple task...
Very nice! I particularly like the double spiral "sunflower" like pattern you put the LEDs in.

Looks very nice!
From the instructables site it seems as if you've been experimenting a bit with the controller hardware to get enough PWM channels - have you tried toying around with an FPGA? I'd think that one of the smaller Xilinx Spartan3AN's would be very interesting...:)
