After the Russian-Persian conquest over Azerbaijani Khanates the Treaty of Gulistan was established in 1813 in which Derbend, Shaki, Borchali, Guba, Shivan, Ganja, Karabakh and Baku Khanates became vassals of the Russian Empire.

After a failed attempt by the Persian Empire to reconquer the lost Azerbaijani Khanates, the Treaty of Turkmenchay was signed by the Russian- and Persian Empire in 1828. The treaty agreed on the vassalisation of Erivan, Nakhchivan and Talysh Khanates into the Russian Empire; the Persian Empire renounced claims to Northern Azerbaijani Khanates.

The Azerbaijani nation was now divided in two parts (north & south).

While North Azerbaijani Khanates became part of the Russian Empire, Southern Azerbaijan Khanates became part of the Persian Empire.

Immediately after the Russian victory, Armenian families from the Persian Empire (most notably Maragha) who were promised ambitious privileges were settled in Karabakh.

As part of the Russian Imperial policy to destroy the nationhood and unity of the Azerbaijani people and make it a integrity of the Russian Empire, Azerbaijani people were renamed to Tatars, Muslims or Turkmen. This caused much confusion amongst Azerbaijanis and still continues to cause misguidance amongst scholars while studying the history of Caucasus.

Although the Christification of Muslim ethnic groups within the Russian Empire went fluently according to plan, most Muslims who refused to convert where from the Caucasus, most notably the Azerbaijanis.

The Russian Empire who was cautious for another conquest attempt by the Persian Empire decided that the Muslim population of Azerbaijani Khanates were not loyal enough. Thus the Russian Empire decided to replace the population of the Azerbaijani Khanates one by one with ethnic Christian Armenians.

Armenians from the Ottoman Empire and Persian Empire were settled in Azerbaijani lands, the first was Erivan Khanate then Karabakh Khanate.

Special privileges were created for Armenians to settle in Azerbaijani lands.
