Speech is an indicator of performance. The yogis say "It is despicable to utter even one word without purpose". It is because the yogis always remain is a state of higher intelligence and are in total control of their consciousness. They don't want to waste their energy thinking useless thoughts or articulating them. If you look at our civilization today and analyze how careful we are with our thought and speech energy it is clear that we are wasting it more then using it properly.
