George Harter from the A Night on the Town Radio Series interviewed Charles Strouse at Sardi's in New York City. Charles sang a much beloved song called "Once Upon A Time" from a little known musical of his called The All American.
Wow! The composer, himself, singing this lovely, bittersweet song. Whenever I feel very low, I recall this song and sing it, if only to myself.
And I DO recall the musical "All American," which I believe was Ray Bolger's last. He played a professor. Indeed, "Once upon a time never comes again." To quote a lovely song from another musical, with much the same feeling, "Take hold of that Golden Moment. For once it never comes back again!" :)
What a brilliant tune. Hearing Mr. Strouse sing it at this age adds all that much more to the lyrics.
