HMS Surprise crusing Cedar Creek Lake in Kentucky. It is Steel, Chapman & Hutchinson kit from Palo Alto CA. The ship is flying a US ensign as she was recently captured by we colonists.

The model is radio controlled and she is 110 inches long, 80 inches tall and 35 inches across the main course sail yard. She displaces 110 pounds in the water.

A great sailing square rigger model ship.

  • 1/24 scale seems to be the minimum size for a scale square rigger. I have watched everything there is to see on youtube re squareriggers - and all the smaller scales seem to "just not make it". You are making quite a case for SC&H (do they pay you? :).... - so perhaps some day I will put my money where my mouth is and start my own fleet. Too bad we cant face off when that happens - I am a bit far away.

  • @cfodk G'day Cfodk--I agree that 1:24 is the best square rigged model for sailing and transport. A friend is building a brig in 1:12 scale which is enormous and hopefully we will see it on the water later this year. No, SC&H does not pay us but as far as I am concerned they are the best deal in the market, their ships sail wonderfuly. Man would we love to have some more ships join our fleet sail days. Jump in, the water is fine!

  • A nice model, even if it is flying the wrong ensign!, but I don't bear a grudge.

Is the model fitted with a motor as it appears to be going pretty well for what appears to be a light breeze.

  • @hughgareth Thank you. The reason we are flying the Yankee ensign is to sneek up on the USS Syren and open with a broadside of 16 32# carronades.

The ship is strictly sail powered, no auxillary motor at all. I had to learn to sail one of these things. The correct ensign is flying on the ship during the fleet sail last September.

  • @USMarineRifleman0311 Semper Fidelis--I did not know there was a Master and Commander 2. I fly the Yankee flag just to stir the POMES.

I appreciate you writing and your service. AIRBORNE!

  • @mamalugi12

if you watch master and commander 2 you'll see how she was captured in American waters lol

  • what's that? uss surprise? hahahaha.look at the flag in stern..

  • @Jimkalski Thank you for your encouragment. Yes, the ensign was changed for the crowd who were watching. She was captured by the colonialists.

  • Was just at 'Ott' and loved it and now, the 'Surprise'! Love your interests and their incarnations :) Though doesn't look right not flying the right ensign ;)
