April 25th, 2009: I had never been to Muncie, Indiana, and quite frankly, am blown away by the place. It is a bewildering array of signals, switches, and tracks. The NS line from Richmond splits in three and the CSX Indy Line Sub. cuts straight through town. There were four consecutive trains that all blocked each other in town that had fantastic locomotive lash-ups. I did tape the last train, NS 197, in Muncie but my video from New Castle is better.

I believe the first train was Q-358 with a SD-60-GP38-2-SD-50-SD-60 lashup.

The next train was NS 170 with a Conrail blue SD60M and C40-8W, with NS black SD70M and RP14BD (only 1 of 2 on the entire roster).

The next CSX train had a duo of a SD40-2 and SD60. I think this was Q-347.

Then things got interesting with NS train 197 who we would hear on the radio for the next three hours struggling down toward Cincinnati with a lone ex-Conrail SD-60. The dispatcher tried desperately to get him to go into every siding between Muncie and Richmond (he would force two higher priority trains into sidings) because the engineer was certain that he would not make the hill out of Richmond and tried to reason with the dispatcher to let him get to Campbellstown, Ohio before putting him into a siding.

  • what kind of scanner do you use?

  • I personally don't have a scanner. I was with two other people, both of them had scanners but I'm not sure what kind. Anything Radio Shack sells I'm told is pretty good.

  • so can it be any handheld, because i think i heard somewhere that you needed a big antenna

  • Me? I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever had a scanner talk on YouTube. Any antenna should work fine.

  • I live just north of muncie so I go there alot. Some days is really slow, other days its non stop. If you just go north of walnut The C&O station is all restored. just about half a block west of walnut the NYC station was right there of course its gone but you can see the slab where it stood. the most i have seen is about 13 trains in about 4 hrs. so if you find a good day its worth railfanning there

  • I had a very knowledgeable friend along with me who knew Muncie like the back of his hand. We visited all of those places you mentioned (this was shot near the NYC freight station). It started off very slow and then around 3:00 all hell broke loose. Five trains show up and all blocked each other, the all went through the plant very slowly because they were just getting started after being held.
