I filmed this footage through the glass window as I could not open it the blast from the gale was so great. I watch the Westray ferry sail past my house several times a day its the first time I have seen it turn towards Shapinsay. I still dont know if the gale moved it or it was a manouvre to get less trouble from the wind. The gale has been severe today I think anyone on board would have been scared to death.
The footage was filmed from Egilsay the ferries destination is Kirkwall
Crickey that is just amazing. Hats off to the Captain.:)

It was to get her head into the wind right enough but also to avoid creel bouys in the area. Glad I wasn't on board. My husband was captain that day.

Mailed to you before I found this video. Plenty of fresh air on Egilsay today, I see.
What views you have, even from your windows . . . the BBC missed this. Excellent video, vital commentary. Thanks for this glimpse into the wind.
Hope everyone makes it safely to shore. You Orkney Islanders are brave souls . . . life and death weather on land and sea.
