'The Year Of The Sex Olympics' was written by the great TV writer Nigel Kneale and was originally aired on British TV on 29 July 1968. It was the penultimate play in the BBC series 'Theatre 625' which ran from 1964 to 1968. It was filmed in colour, but only black and white copies are known to exist. Directed by Michael Elliot, it starred Leonard Rossiter, Suzanne Neave, Tony Vogel and Brian Cox.

From the IMDb:

"Set in a future when the world is dominated and run by television, where language has become almost redundant and all 'tensions' - love, war, hate, loyalty - have been removed. Overpopulation is a problem, so there are gluttony programmes to put people off food and pornography programmes to put them off sex. There is artsex and sportsex, and now this - the year of the Sex Olympics. Audience attention begins to wane, however, until TV executive Ugo Priest works on a new concept - a reality-based programme in which a couple is stranded on a bleak island, without the aid of any modern technology, and their efforts to survive filmed twenty-four hours a day. A concept which may sound familiar in the age of reality TV... "

  • Supper Brilliant Sci Fi, nothing done now has even a quarter of the creativity that BBC sci fi shows did back then, BBC + Nigel Kneale the best!

  • Thanks for the recommendation, Brooker, you funister man.

  • Burn Out at 30, Sex, then is good for you!

  • Art-Sex, I like the sound of that!!!!

  • Excellent. Just discovered this. Its like 1984 and a brave new world all rolled into one:)

  • with internet t.v. its comming soon........

  • I don't normally say this, but it is such a shame this has not survived in colour. In this case, the sets and costumes were clearly designed to add dramatic effect. Does anyone know if this could be colourised like that Dad's Army episode?

  • You madhead? This video is real jumbo...it's what ya waant...it's what ya neeedd!

  • "Sooner than you think", In deed! I believe soon is Upon us!

Only difference between this and where we find ourselves now is ~ at least this was just misguided social engineering...when this show actually airs, it will be all about the money it will generate. I hope those TV execs with their mind on the bottom line are not fans of Nigel Kneale; I doubt they'd take the right lesson away from this.

I don't know if you guys have this in the UK, Pam, but Happy Labor Day, just in case!

    One!
