The research project Look-ahead Control is presented. Thanks to new information technologies, such as GPS, it is possible for a vehicle to know where it is. The aim is to reduce the fuel consumption by automatically plan uphill and downhill driving. A demonstrator vehicle has been developed that show significant fuel consumption reductions during highway tests.
The demonstrator was developed in collaboration with Scania CV AB that recently released a product called Scania Active Prediction that adjust the cruising speed depending on the future road topography. See more on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1nqKakM74w
More information about the research project can be found in, e.g., the journal paper http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.conengprac.2008.07.005
The research center MOViii http://www.moviii.liu.se/ supported the project.
