http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=110584 A couple of weeks ago, my buddy gave me an extra 8 1/2 cases of MREs - Meals Ready to Eat. I did not have the room for them, but I'am not going to say no to free food stocks.

  • I picked up some MRE's from the army surplus stores... the guys at the store were saying that they don't come with exp dates on the boxes... obviously they lied. I hear ppl eat MRE's far beyond their exp dates - what are your thoughts on that? I have mine in my emergency pack so it is cool and dry...just don't know how old it is.

  • @OneFabFisher - The date on the box is not really a "expiration" date - its more like a test date. When that date is reached, your supposed to eat one of the meals to see if its still good.

As for MREs expiring - yes, they expire. I opened one on a hiking trip, and was was expired. It was so nasty tasting I could not eat it - and it had a funny smell to it.

  • Sorry, but you're storing emergency supplies, that will probably not be used for years, in your living space. Why don't you build a storage shed that can be locked and store your camping/emergency supplies in there, so you're not having to live like a pack rat ? I agree with preparing, but the way you're living is crazy and is a real grind on your everyday life.

  • @Spacestuff4me - Store MREs in a shed, where it can easily get over 100 degrees in the summer? Those MREs would cook themselves in the Texas heat.

Your probably looking at 110 degrees in the shed. At those temps, the MREs would spoil in a matter of months, instead of years.

  • If a disaster happens and you are not home you are fucked!

  • @tylertyler82 - Sorry, but I do not understand your comment. Do you carry food with you all the time or something?

  • good precaution... ya wont know if the US gets hit with nukes, EMPs or whatever WMD...

  • if you need to make space ill take some lol

  • ok say its 2011 what did u do with all this? i have some boxes my self but they dont expire ti;; 2015 and if i dont use them by then i will give them to the homeless ! just thinking did u do the same?

  • can i hace some??? ive always wanted some cuz i always see videos about MREs

  • Ive had MREs that were more than 10yrs old and they were still good, but it all depends on how there stored and what type of food it was. Ive also had canned food 8yrs old and older that i had left from the Y2K scare and it was edible, of course canned food will last longer than MREs. If u can find it, thu i dont think they make it any more, the maple nut cake is great and so r the BBQ meatballs.

  • Wow, that's a lot of MRE's. I never got my hands on military MRE's yet, but the Sure-Paks, aPacks, and Menu C's are good. I always like to keep a couple of crates in my house in case of a rainy day. You have a mighty fine friend there to just give you 8 and a half cases of MRE's just like that.

  • Its 2011 how many of them mre's have you downed?
