Gary and I, while going through Dad's papers found a weathered and checked photo scrapbook of happier days from the 1940's when in the Navy and a very young man. Our Dad, Charles Clendenning, passed away on July 6, 2009 and was buried in Riverside's National Cemetry, Riverside California. His days on the USS McGowan always remained dear to him... right up to the day he left us. Dad married Doris Mae Bowers from East Liverpool Ohio, their hometown, in 1944. They were married for 65 years. Dad... we'll all miss you, love. Your Family, 3 children, 9 Grand children, 23 Great-Grand children and 2 Great-Great-Grand-children.

  • Thank you for making this marvelous video. My 1st LT. on board USS Kawishiwi (AO146) during the Vietnam War, was a great man. He served in McGowan as a QM2 at Surigao Straights. I'm sure your dad would be proud of you for creating this fantastic video.

  • My dad, E. R. Herbert, was among the first crew on the USS McGowan. He served on the McGowan from December 1943 to February 1946. We just celebrated his 90th birthday last weekend (3/12/11). We showed him this video and he enjoyed it so much. He found one picture of himself. Most of the family watching the video had tears in our eyes. It was a great moment. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • My Grandfather served on the McGowan, Im not sure the years but he was there during the Surigao Strait Torpedo Run.

I didnt see him in any of your pictures, but thank you for shareing them!

  • The photo at 2 minutes and 15 seconds is a picture of the fire control-men on the McKowan. My brother is in the front row first person on the left. He never talked about his war experiences during his lifetime. He died at an early age in 1981. This is the only photo that I have ever seen of him that was taken during his shipboard service. His name was Wickham Allen Steele. He served on the McKown during it's entire wartime service. Thank you for including it in your

    wonderful video.

  • afterwards she became the Spanish War Ship Jorge Juan D-25

  • My Dad served aboard the USS McGowan in 1952-53 after spending 2 years on Guam. Thanks for sharing your photos and memories of your Dad.

  • I was in this boat when it was Spanish, but in peacetime. Nice video and nice background music. Thanks for sharing
