This train/machine came through our central Illinois town installing the new high speed rail. The process starts with the trolleys loading the new ties onto and picking up the old ties from the machine. As the front on the machine travels on the old track it begins to remove the spikes holding the old track. Next a magnetic wheel picks up the spikes and loads them onto a conveyor belt. The old track is guided up and away from the ties. Next the old ties are picked up and placed on a conveyor belt. Then the old ballast is removed and leveled before the new concrete ties are placed and spaced. The new track which was deposited earlier is guided onto the new ties just ahead of the back wheels of the machine.

  • Im not belittleing the work of NASA as we have learned a lot from things like the Hubble telescope and a little about Earth by our missions to the moon. But when you consider what we spent and what we learned its not nearly as good of an investment as it would have been if we'd spent that money on high speed rail development. And thanks for the reply Sideslide23

  • @Blue24U pariently we choose the space shuttle program instead of High speed rails which cost over $100 Billions for the last 30 years, yes if we choose to do high speed rail then the Space shuttle program wouldn't exist after the apollo mission.

  • @sideslide23 Thats the plan, Obama's office wanted this to happen and in truth its something we should have started working on 20-30 years ago. If we had I imagine things would have been a lot different. Oh well hopefully this will benefit the future generations as much as it should have our generation.

  • @donzaika It will be more like higher speed rail.

  • @donzaliko don't know whats its name but I'm shure the 110 MPH HSR going from Chicago to St Louis will be operated by Amtrack

  • @sideslide23 can u tel me train name?

    is this amtrak acela express?

  • @donzaliko it is it will travel top speed of 110MPH between Chicago and St Louis, and there talking about a 220 MPH train as well.

  • is this High speed rail??

  • This is Very Exciting, we should speed up more of the amtrak trains around this country.
