ummmm, not really right, the f6 had two 30mm cannons and two missiles, they could and did stay with russian intruders to escort them away from our airspace, were scambled with 2 mins readiness, 40,000ft per min rate of climb.
The lightning was designed to get out there before the bombers could get close, they defended our shores for 28 years 7 days a week.
Im glad they were there
Cheers

Superb !!!

@elroto Its got no flight certificate, so its not allowed to fly- such a shame as it looked as though it was just about to leap into the air......
-
No its not ! They havent even fittted the engines, pipes and sytems yet !
You throw them hundred grand and you might just see it happen some time in the future.

The one in the US is now doing test flights. EE Lighting T.5, XS422

My father in law worked on Lightnings at the English Electric factory at Strand Road Preston. He has told me of the technical achievements of the day that left the yanks taking a lot of the good bits and making them under licence. Brilliant plane, aggressive looks, it looked after us during those dark cold war years.

No its not!!!!!!

this plane is ugly..

@steve5242 And boy do they fly, I was fortunate enough to see them in 2006 but didn't realise the significance of it until a few years later.

@264flight and too fast.................
Still the best (and last) all British supersonic fighter. To see it fly today you'll have to go to South Africa (Someone did tell me there's one or two flying in the States)

Hi thanks for the comment no the only ones flying are those in SA but we are lucky here in the UK that we have these two machines operated by LPG at Bruntingthorpe.

what gives, was there a problem with the take off?
elroto 3 years ago
No not as such, the only problem with the take off is the CAA here in the UK and for that reason this amazing machine will never fly again in the UK. :_(.
