The psychological effects of being heavy - and obesity - can be devastating. People with a weight issue are often made fun of by others who have normal weights. Jokes poking fun at overweight and obese people are familiar in our society. Heavy people are forced to suffer a torrent of psychological barbs not to mention other social discrimination's. Because of this, the can suffer from low self-esteem, sometimes feel inadequate and are viewed as the source of their own problems. http://bit.ly/bWQ0hy

Every social situation is potentially awkward for a person with excess weight. Appearing in the beach or at public swimming pools, where they wear clothes that are more revealing, is a difficult time. If an overweight person decides to play competitive sports he will often suffer the disgrace of being the least wanted. Quite often, in school, obese or overweight children perform poorer when measured academically than 'normal' weight peers - they also tend to have lower grade point averages. When they finally leave school, they have more difficulty gaining acceptance into college and securing jobs and future promotions. Hardly surprising, then, that such life experiences tend to lead to poor self esteem and self-confidence. So starts a succession of social isolation, emotional withdrawal, depression, inactivity, more overeating, and quite often further weight gain.

The distortion of body image and overall body disappointment among obese and overweight people are often implicated in the development of negative self-worth, and can act as risk factors for the development of depression and unhealthy eating patterns. Body image may be affected and partly determined by a person's cultural values and beliefs regarding beauty and attractiveness.

Many overweight people like to blame any overweight on personal medical conditions like thyroid disease. The simple fact is that, fewer than 1% of those who are overweight or obese have a genuine hormonal imbalance, or other condition. While there isn't a single reason that 100 explains this phenomenon, likely causes are poor nutrition, bad eating habits, and.

But there are some very simple things an obese or overweight person could do to enhance his/her self-esteem. For starters they could seek the advice of their doctor to determine just how significant the problem is, or if there really is a problem at all. Of course everyone is different and many seem to be fat when compared to family and friends are really just within a normal range for themselves.

Limiting the amount of TV they watch would be a good start. Not surprisingly, there's a link being overweight and watching television. The average person watches an average of 3 hours of TV every day, - do you know what is the product most commonly advertised purchase item on TV? Food. What's the most likely thing people do while watching television? Eat - that's what they do. TV would probably be better limited to a reasonable time, say a couple of hours, every day. More beneficially, TV viewing could be done while exercising.

Those who are overweight have a responsibility to shield themselves from the physical and psychological harm brought about by being overweight. Establishing patterns of healthy eating and exercising sensibly, they can defeat this enemy so that they can live and enjoy life without being weighed down because of being bigger than the 'average weight.

  • In about 50-100 years obesity will be corrected with genetic modification. Basically, you're doomed, but your children and your grandchildren will be okay.
