Walpurgis, Friedgund Göttsche-Niessner

Beverly Harlton, alto flute

This piece is based on the witches' Walpurgis dance of the Harz region of Germany. Walpurgisnacht is a witches' festival (also celebrated by non-witches in certain parts of the world) celebrated on May 1, which is six months away from Halloween. The purpose of the festival is to welcome spring. Someone should probably let the witches know that spring starts in March...

This is a fun and jazzy piece for solo alto flute that includes many extended techniques. When listening to it, you can imagine witches crawling around and dancing.
