Unfortunately a garda can stop and search you anytime he or she wants.
Best thing to do is learn all about your rights under Irish law. And of course stand your ground with them using a polite manner.

@lockstockdub Your bang on the money. This rookie asshole has been watching too many Charles Bronson movies lol and is trying to make a name for himself. Not at my expense though. Using intimidating behavior for no reason is going to do him a lot more damage in the long-run and he'd better wise up quickly, particularly working in Dublin City otherwise hes going to get badly hurt. Too much testosterone and not enough sense.

@GetRealPrettyGirl That's true Lena, there's bad apples in every police force. Too many young Irish Cops are very arrogant in my opinion and are known for abusing their power. Most of the senior Cops are OK, I've no issue with them, they are generally sound and don't take the piss.

@mtinp I didn't have the vest on, i don't wear it all the time but it would have been funny had i been wearing it. Jesus, picture the scenario, me wearing what looks a bit like a bullet proof vest lol having been stopped by the police.
