A poem I wrote for one of my favorite racehorses, the ill-fated Barbaro. Set to music by Sigur Ros. Please comment and rate!
They say he was just a horse.
But I will never forget that horse.
The bay who flew a white heart
on his forehead, an emblem
of what he would achieve,
and what he would endure.
The colt with the sincere eyes and the ears that spoke
who pounded down the Churchill stretch
dusted with dirt and glory,
and donned the mantle of roses
as if he were a prince who had waited
all his life for this moment, his coronation.
Now he is gone, and we must look
for him to live again
in the haunted cry of the bugle,
in the wind that first awakens
the desire to run in the hearts
of the new foals whose uncertain strides
will one day be symmetries of power.
Now he is gone, and all we can say
is that we loved him,
And yes, he was just a horse.
But a horse is enough.

Really excellent. You've inspired me to write a haiku for Barbaro. The line below was just superlative:
in the wind that first awakens
the desire to run in the hearts
of the new foals whose uncertain strides
will one day be symmetries of power.

Wow Im just noticing that yes his star actually was shaped like a heart... scary. And although Ive commented before, I satill think this is amazing. Were I live we do GCSE exams which are offical exams that influence the rest of your schooling. For English part of the exam requires you to write a story, and I might do one about Barbaro. I can write stories but I cannot write poetry and that is one of the nicest poems I have ever read.
