Frances Moore Lappé is a "living democracy" advocate and world food expert. She is the author or coauthor of 18 books, including Diet for a Small Planet, which was chosen among "75 Books by Women Whose Words Have Changed the World" by the Women's National Book Association. It also was recently dubbed a "blueprint for eating with a small carbon footprint long before the term was coined," by J.M. Hirsch of the Associated Press.

In 2008, "Gourmet Magazine" selected Frances among 25 people, including Thomas Jefferson and Julia Child, whose work has changed the way America eats, and the James Beard Foundation named her Humanitarian of the year. She is a winner of the Right Livelihood Award, called the Alternative Nobel. She and her daughter Anna Lappé launched the Cambridge-based The Small Planet Institute and the Small Planet Fund in 2001.

Frances's major media appearances include the "Today Show," "Fox News," "Hardball," NPR, and PBS Now. Articles by or about her have appeared in the New York Times, Harper's, O: The Oprah Magazine, People, The Nation, and more.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

  • Only 2,000 views, that's crazy! This should be compulsory viewing for every human being. She brings such wisdom and scientific understanding together in a simple and accessible way. Why is it that all the good and relevant ideas never become more popular and ingrained in our culture, yet the superficial junk that we are filled up on in our daily lives is so widespread and endemic?

  • Interest based currency alone determines "highest return to existing wealth". Never mind our system of property ownership and that we allow private banks to issue, allocate and own the currency we use. I like Frances and I'm finding her bright side approach wimpy.Elite groups will go to great lengths to ensure their control over populations~its not a pretty process its violent and it usually works to kow people into conformity.

  • @jemmre Capitalism, that's why.

  • i dont understand is protein combining still nessecary or are they enforcing this new myth that you have to combine but not at ones? is this another myth? i am getting so tired of this monkey business

  • I should add, towards the end on the talk, I realized her delivery would be better received being read. She's a good writer but her speaking ability....(see below)

  • This was NOT a good talk. She is opaque, inarticulate and I don't think she even has a point. If you say she sounds like a minister, I agree, and now know why you might find her convincing. Her theories come off as shortsighted and her delivery makes her sound insane......And, I'm trying to be nice.

  • I agree with her people need to come together and make this world a better place because the world were making were not gonna be proud of

  • She is still as lucid, articulate and on the mark as ever. She speaks so beautifully, and her convictions and self-assurance make her sound like a minister delivering a message in which he or she believes entirely.

This is beautiful. I had tears in my eyes because her words were so heartfelt.

  • Frances Moore Lappe for president!!!

  • summary of groundbreaking ideas communicated in her recent books, since hearing speak live in 2007 in London really influenced thinking, important voice for a future, shows possible to be realistic and enthusiastic at the same time, questioning unexamined assumptions of dominant culture, new paradigms for understanding our landscape of reality
