In warm periods in the past, the Earth thrived, forests spread, deserts shrank, storms moderated as the temperature gradient between tropics and poles reduced. For some reason, somewhere along the way, someone convinced you that the opposite must be true - but that's where you've been fooled.

A very salient point and a good way to get people thinking about risk managment. Unfortunately, if, as you suggest, you put more columns in, i.e. a gradient of action scenarios, then you get a number of columns to chose from. When that happens you are discussing the likelihood of an event occuring and you are right where you started from.
