I am very happy with Canon SX1 IS.
Photo qty is good below ISO 800 as is fact with compact sensor cameras.
Flash is very strong and increases with
ISO. Indoor shooting is good if you are not zooming too much.

Did you use the zoom when the background was so blurry?
I have have heard that to zooming in from a distance can make a good Depth of field.

Yes. I used zoom to some extent to combine with low Aperture value to get shallow DOF.
