Robin remembers his disillusionment and ultimate separation from Batman, becomes the hardened leader of Teen Titans and develops some villains of his own.
We watch as he quickly realizes that the rules of Batman no longer apply and while he initially uses this knowledge for ill as seen in his Red X persona, we also see the blessing of going his own way as he succeeds where the Dark Knight Failed: he allowed himself to have a love interest in the Heart of Starfire.
It is this fire in her heart that brings out the man of Robin who would one day become Nightwing:
